Backyard Almanac: Fall Colors and Spider Kites

The color of the leaves, bird migration, and the upcoming eclipse are all on Larry Weber's mind, but there's something floating through the trees that catches his attention in October.

Spider babies are on the move. "They often move by pulling a thread from their spinnerets," says Weber. "They allow that thread to get caught in the breeze and that carries them away." At dusk or dawn, a glance toward the sun will show signs of this unique transportation. "Every walk I take I look at bare branches or fences... and I will see those threads out there."
