Francesca, Giovanni, and Ya'myali, students at Harbor City International school, have had several recent opportunities to approach the issue of climate change through events and activities. These experiences have been conducted in the classroom, around the local community, and as far away as the state capital.
Francesca had the chance to take part in the 10,000 Pounds Project, a program that challenges participant to conceive of a way to remove 10,000 pounds of carbon from the atmosphere. Francesca focused on food waste, meeting with restaurants and grocery stores in town to discuss the possibility of adding compost bins. Students involved worked with representatives from the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment.
Giovanni was a part of a group of students that travelled to the capitol for the Climate Justice Summit. There, they attended workshops about regenerative and industrial agriculture, and discussed the health defects that come along with a changing climate. The Climate Justice Summit was held in St. Paul and organized by Climate Generation. Sixty students from across the state participated - including ten from Harbor City.
Ya'myali recounted her experience with a school simulation activity called EN-ROADS. Through the simulation, students are assigned a particular group to represent (Ya'myali was in the group representing oil production). They are then tasked with proposing actions on how to keep the global temp at an acceptable level.
