Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus)

Fog and Thunderstorms in December? Hard to Believe.

Lightning in December isn’t unheard of, but it is quite uncommon. The warm temps and rain washed away the snow from previous weeks, but new snow took its place, so all the animal tracks seen the last few days are fresh. The ground remains frozen, so the inch or so of rain received in the Northland will help to replenish the low water levels in lakes and ponds.

Larry noted many of the usual birds at his feeder, but he was quite surprised to see a flicker – quite uncommon this time of year!
