With a few fresh inches of snow on the ground, the 37th annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon has begun. The full-distance marathon this year has 17 teams starting. Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 pandemic still affecting the region - and the world - few spectators could be at the start of the race. But KUMD's Lisa Johnson reports live from the start and describes the scene.
In the days leading up to the race, factors were discussed that may impact this year's race. Will the warmer temperatures predicted over the next couple days - near the freezing point - make some teams decide to slow their pace to prevent the dogs overheating? Or, will this year's shorter marathon distance make some teams decide to increase their pace instead?
KUMD will have marathon updates Monday and Tuesday at 8 am, 11 am and 2 pm, featuring expert insights from veteran mushers Jason Rice and John Stetson, including results for the full distance Beargrease Marathon, the Beargrease 120 Mid-Distance race, the Beargrease 120 Junior Class race, and the Beargrease 40 Recreational Class race.
