Every month is like January these days.
In the sense that the Roman god Janus, from whom the month takes its name, is usually shown having two heads or faces. Janus is the god of beginnings and endings, the future and the past, and transitions.
And every month at least a year, the first half is dramatically different than the second half.
We were talking about it last year, in fact (Backyard Almanac: a little talk at halftime and January came back and acted like January).
But a few things are different, anyway: like what's with the hairy and downy woodpeckers drumming for territory at this time of year, and what's up with the horned lark?
