This year, the annual gathering of local poets typically tied to the Homegrown Music Festival is still happening, but it's taken on a different name. The Twin Ports Poetry Showcase keeps the spirit of the event thriving tonight from 6-8pm at Wussow's Concert Cafe.
For the past 8 years, Tina Higgins Wussow has invited area poets to share their poetry in front of a live audience. Thirty poets will take the stage for three minutes each to share their words. "It really is a showcase of the best poetry that's happening in town right now," says Higgins Wussow. "There's always surprise poets who I've never met before."
For Higgins Wussow, this community event harkens back to a tradition as old as the spoken word, and a practice that can be uplifting. "When you do find yourself in a room with poetry happening, it's good for the spirit... The comradery and the connection and the love in the room is really quite striking."
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning. This edition of Community Connection is made possible in part by Lakewalk Surgery Center.
