The Big Sugar by Mary Logue is a western, a mystery, a romance, and a sequel rolled into one. The story follows Brigid Reardon, a young Irish immigrant who finds herself in late-1800s Cheyenne surrounded by vast landscapes, rowdy streets, and lawlessness aplenty.
The book's title borrows a phrase that used to refer to wealthy landowners in the west. Research for the story yielded insight into terminology and language; and the process was not just a requisite for author, but also a joy. "I just love doing the research," says Logue. "You find these little nuggets... that just work and kind of open a door."
Readers can find The Big Sugar at most bookstores and on-line through the University of Minnesota Press.
