MN Reads: "100 Things to Do in Minnesota Before You Die" by Julie Jo Larson

Reedy Press

A bucket list often starts from a personal place. For Julie Jo Larson, it was an alternative to video games. “Instead of giving our kids video games, my husband and I would take them to different locations across Minnesota,” says Larson. The family travels and experiences initially lead to 100 Things to Do in Minnesota Northwoods Before You Die, but Larson’s publisher, Reedy Press, encouraged the author to expand her search to the entire state.

100 Things to Do in Minnesota Before You Die is a compilation of diverse activities from all corners of the state. Activities cover the historical, culinary, commercial, recreational, and lots more. The author admits that not everything in the book is of special interest to her, but she wanted to maintain a balance. “Some of the things in the book... I don’t do, things like zip lining and really loud concert,” says Larson. “But I know there are people that love those kinds of events. I had to include something for everyone.”

In general, the book steers away from the beaten path and shines a light on some of the more esoteric locales. “What's neat or unusual?" Larson asked during her search. "There were a lot of surprises... There's so much to see and do.”

Larson will be at the Bookstore at Fitger’s in Duluth this Saturday, April 29th from 1-3pm and at Zenith Bookstore on June 3rd from 1-3pm. 100 Things to Do in Minnesota Before You Die can also be purchase at Barnes and Noble throughout the state and on Julie Jo Larson’s website.
