Earth Day is this Saturday and it’ll be a big one for the arts. “There has a been a long connection between earth day and sustainability and the arts in our community,” says Annie Dugan. “A lot of art galleries and artists are… coming up and resurfacing.”
The exhibition Catching Up/Resurfacing at Nease Gallery will be focused on highlighting local artists. Artists include Tara Austin, Craig Blacklock, David Bowen, Kathy McTavish, Karen Nease, Joellyn Rock and Tim White. In addition to these artists, Amanda Hunter has filled an entire room with images that are, according to Dugan, “one-part enchanted forest, one-part mythology, one-part childish wonder, but with a little bit of an edge." The event takes place 2-5pm this Saturday.
Kirsten Aune textiles in Lincoln Park has an event on Saturday from 12-3pm. Aune creates textiles with repetitive patterns and some colors that suit the season. “It’s the colors that you need to see right now,” says Dugan. Kirsten’s exhibit will focus on 365 days of plastics. Martha Ritter will also give a talk about combating the throwaway fashion industry through sustainability.
Around the corner in Lincoln Park at Duluth Pottery from 11am-4pm, Chris Monroe will showcase new drawings, pastels, and paintings. “When I think of the voice of Duluth in the visual arts, Chris Monroe is at the core of that,” says Dugan. Prepare for cute animals and dry humor.
