Community Connection: Filmmaker Sam Weston

Person in suit, interior

Seven years ago, Sam Weston viewed Duluth as a stepping-stone that would lead him to a larger, more appropriate locale for making films. As it turned out, Weston was able to find plenty of opportunities here in the Northland. “I very quickly discovered the budding film community," says Weston. "This is a city where I could actually build a film career.”

Weston started by writing novels, but soon realized that in order to make sure that what he was seeing in his head was also seen by the audience, he decided to translate his novels into screenplays. “Then I figured out that in order for the screenplay that I'm writing to actually translate the way that I imagine it, I'm going to have to direct it myself."

Weston’s work has found its way to streaming services and he has several screenplays that have garnered acclaim at various festivals. Currently, his short films are available for viewing on YouTube. You can learn more about Weston’s work at BattleMageFilms.com
