Community Connection: Documentarian Mike Scholtz

Joe Gunderson

For Mike Scholtz, interest in documentary filmmaking started at a very early age. "It was the short documentaries they used to run on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood... that drew me into doing this for real."

That initial spark has yielded films about Vikings, old Hollywood, and competitive jigsaw puzzlers. And if those weren't far enough off the beaten path, Scholtz's 2013 film Wild Bill's Run is an Arctic crime caper.

These days, Scholtz finds a lot of inspiration from simply living in the Northland. "I find Minnesota to be a deeply strange place. There's no shortage of stories around here." The topic that's currently percolating with Scholtz is smelt. "I was never super interested... but then I started going to the annual magic smelt parade. That really sparked my interest."

More information about Mike and his films can be found on his website.
